My Story
After a decade in the transport sector, I was made redundant at the end of November 2024
So what did I do? Turned off the 4.30am alarm for starters!! I spring cleaned the house, made the Christmas cakes. Walked the dogs, caught up with sleep and read a few books.

So what did I do? Turned off the 4.30am alarm for starters!! I spring cleaned the house, made the Christmas cakes. Walked the dogs, caught up with sleep and read a few books.
Then it was nearly Christmas. I started to looked for a job, nothing! No one was recruiting a qualified Transport Manager, and the couple that were, were 50 miles away.
That’s when I started to wonder whether I wanted to stay in the transport sector, working 50-60 hours per week before travelling an hour each end of the day? My health had suffered over the last 12 months, I desperately needed to address my work / life balance so I started to research.
I had enjoyed doing my own nails for the last couple of years so was that something to look into? Could I make something I really enjoyed doing into something that would make me a wage?
I’d often found it difficult to get appointments at the salons due to working: they were often booked up if they did later appointments and Saturdays. Surely I couldn’t be the only person in that predicament? No one did mobile nail and beauty services in the area, would it work? Could I make it work?
So what do I do? I went online and signed up for online training in nails and beauty. It provided the theory and background for the treatments I wanted to offer. All well and good knowing the theory but the practice? Well I had myself, I roped in family and friends and I practiced, and practiced, and then practiced a bit more. I re-watched the training programs, I practiced a bit more.
And that, in a nutshell, is how H@Home came about. Nail and beauty services in the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits you.
There’s no childcare to find, no parking space to search for, you don’t even have to brush your hair! And for some, they physically can’t get to a salon but why should they miss out on a bit of self care and company?
Rather than seeing the negative in being made redundant, I looked at it as an opportunity to reevaluate me - the career path I was on, and actually ask the question of what did I really want to do for the next 20-25 years.
